Sugaring Internship
This internship runs from mid February through April,
starting before the trees are tapped until the sugaring
season is done. We have approximately 1200 taps on vacuum
lines and 4oo buckets. We have a high-efficiency wood
fired arch in our sugarhouse. The intern will be involved in
preparing the lines and bucket system for tapping, tapping
the trees with youthwork crews, maintaining and repairing
the lines, collecting and boiling the sap, stacking and
splitting firewood, and may help with other farm tasks. This
will involve long hours and hard work outdoors. Work in the
sugarbush may involve using snowshoes in deep snow. You will
also do a fair amount of moving and stacking firewood. The
more hours you are willing to put in and the more flexible
you are with your schedule, the more you will be able to
participate and learn.
You will be expected to work an average of 40 hours per week
as well as doing weekend chores a few times. The work hours
will vary depending on weather, and will regularly include
evenings/nights (sometimes until quite late) and weekends.
Qualifications:
Genuine interest in working on a small, diversified, organic
farm, ability to work as part of a team, driver's license in
good standing, ability to carry out hard physical labor,
willingness to work in extremes of heat and sun and cold and
rain. Some background in agriculture is helpful but not
necessary.
Compensation:
Housing and a stipend are provided.
