Smokey
House receives Stratton Foundation grant!
Smokey House
has
received a McCarty grant from the Stratton Mountain & Valley
Community Benefit Foundation in support of its
Environmental Field Studies
program. The $1,000 grant will help purchase needed
research equipment for this innovative and intensive field
research program for middle school students.
"We are pleased
and honored to receive this grant from the Stratton
Foundation," commented Field Studies Coordinator Shana
Stewart. “We have great ideas for new research projects,
but were limited by the need for modern Global Positioning
System (GPS) units and a digital camera. The citizen
science research that is part of our program often requires
up-to-date equipment to provide accurate and reliable
documentation of our data to the organizations which depend
upon it. We really appreciate the Stratton Foundation’s
commitment to local youth, and are so thankful for the
equipment!”
Over 800 students
from eight area schools have participated in the Field
Studies Program since its inception in 1994. Beyond
practicing scientific investigation and method, this program
helps young people apply reading, writing, mathematics,
communication, and team skills to relevant, place-based
questions.

Thank You,
IBM!
Smokey House Center is delighted to
announce a generous donation of sixteen computers from IBM
Corporation in support of our efforts educating the next
generation of contributing citizens. While we try to provide
our students with “real world” computer skills, we often come up
short on up-to-date, fully functioning equipment. This donation
of thirteen desktop and three laptop computers has provided the
students in our Youthwork and Field Studies programs with the
capacity to use current technology and software in meaningful
applications for their applied and academic work at Smokey
House.
