Season Gardening Internship
This internship runs from April through October. The
duration of this internship means that you can expect to
learn everything involved in running a small, diversified
organic vegetable farm, from starting seedlings and field
prep in the spring to final harvest, food storage and fall
garden clean up. This includes (but may not be limited to)
greenhouse work, garden planning, disking and tilling,
planting, transplanting, weed and pest control, harvest and
washing techniques, soil improvement and cover cropping. We
have approximately 2 acres in organic vegetables and an
additional acre in high bush blueberries. Our vegetables are
sold through a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA),
Farmers Markets, and some wholesaling. This means you will
also have the opportunity to learn what is involved in
managing each of these types of sales.
Depending on interest and skill level, other potential
learning opportunities include animal husbandry (cows,
sheep, poultry, maybe pigs), pasture and hay field
management, and tractor use with various implements.
You will be expected to work 40 hours per week (Monday
through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm with an hour lunch break), as
well as doing weekend chores (about once every 6 to 8 weeks)
and helping with haying in the evenings and on weekends.
Working at least some weekends at the Farmers Market would
be expected, with the weekly schedule being adjusted in
order to give you two days off in a row.
Qualifications:
Genuine interest in working on a small, diversified, organic
farm, ability to work as part of a team, driver's license in
good standing, ability to carry out hard physical labor,
willingness to work in extremes of heat and sun and cold and
rain. Some background in agriculture is helpful but not
necessary.
Compensation:
Housing and a stipend are provided.
